For 75 years, Ft. Randall Federal Credit Union has been more than just a place to manage money. It has been a trusted partner, a community supporter, and a living example of the credit union philosophy: people helping people.

As we celebrate this milestone, it’s worth reflecting not only on how far Ft. Randall has come, but also on what it truly means to be part of a credit union.

From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Community Partner

Ft. Randall Federal Credit Union was founded in 1951 to serve a small group—federal employees connected to the Pickstown School District and their families.

What started as a small, local effort has grown into a financial institution serving thousands of members across south-central South Dakota. Today, the credit union supports more than 3,300 members and manages over $40 million in assets, all while staying true to its roots.

Over the decades, key milestones have shaped this growth:

  • Expansion to a community charter in 1990, opening membership to more local residents

  • Additional eligibility expansions in 2002 and 2016, now serving multiple counties

  • Opening branches in Platte (2004) and Wagner (2011)

  • Achieving CDFI certification in 2020, reinforcing a commitment to underserved communities

  • Reaching over $42 million in assets by 2025

Each step forward reflects a simple mission: serve more people, more effectively, without losing the personal touch.

What Makes a Credit Union Different?

At its core, a credit union is not a bank and that difference matters.

Credit unions like Ft. Randall are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives.

That means:

  • Members are owners, not shareholders

  • Profits are returned to members through better rates and lower fees

  • Decisions are made locally, with members’ best interests in mind

Instead of focusing on maximizing profits, credit unions focus on improving the financial well-being of the people they serve.

When you join a credit union, you’re not just opening an account, you’re becoming part of something bigger.

People Helping People in Action

For 75 years, Ft. Randall Federal Credit Union has lived out the credit union philosophy in real, meaningful ways.

That includes:

  • Supporting local schools and financial education programs

  • Offering scholarships to help students pursue higher education

  • Participating in community events, fundraisers, and volunteer efforts

  • Providing personalized financial guidance to help members succeed

These efforts reflect a deep belief: strong communities create better lives for everyone.

Unlike large, impersonal institutions, Ft. Randall takes pride in knowing its members by name and helping them reach their goals, whether that’s buying a home, saving for the future, or navigating everyday finances.

Growing Without Losing What Matters

One of the most impressive accomplishments over the past 75 years is not just growth, it’s how Ft. Randall has grown.

While expanding services, adopting modern technology, and reaching more communities, the credit union has stayed grounded in its founding values.

Today, members can enjoy:

  • Convenient online and mobile banking

  • Competitive loan and savings rates

  • Local decision-making and quick service

  • A team that genuinely cares

A balance of innovation and tradition, modern banking with a hometown feel.

More Than a Financial Institution

So, what does a credit union really mean?

It means:

  • Belonging to a financial institution that puts you first

  • Trust in decisions made for your benefit, not for profit

  • Community impact that goes beyond dollars and cents

  • Partnership in your financial journey

At Ft. Randall Federal Credit Union, every member is part of a shared mission: to build stronger futures, together.

Because no matter how much changes, one thing remains the same:
